Marist Education in Brazil: Achievements and Challenges
do Prado, João Carlos; Mateucci, Rogério Renato
International Studies in Catholic Education, v9 n2 p146-161 2017
This article explores the history of the Marist Institute in Brazil. It is justified on the basis of the Marist wide-ranging mission in the country for more than a century. The text begins with a discussion of the institution's historical context and the reasons for its foundation in Brazil. Then it suggests the main causes of its success until the mid-twentieth century. The third part deals with the challenges the Marists faced in order to reinvent themselves in the light of the new Church guidelines emanating from the Second Vatican Council. Finally, it discusses the prospects for the Marist mission in the twenty-first century and the possible ways to keep its vitality.
