Identifying Low Cost Energy Improvements for School Buildings: An Energy Audit Manual.
Minnesota State Dept. of Energy and Economic Development, St. Paul.
This manual is a guide for performing energy audits in school buildings using low- and no-cost measures found effective in Minnesota. The manual helps school maintenance and administrative personnel conduct walk-through inspections of school buildings, focusing on the energy efficiency of their equipment and operations. The measures recommended for achieving savings following the audit include making schedules for building use and equipment operation more efficient, cleaning and maintaining equipment, operating equipment at peak efficiency, and keeping the energy output of equipment at the minimum necessary level. The manual explains the value of energy auditing, how to use the auditing forms provided, what tools and equipment are required, how the energy performance of equipment can be measured, and how fuel and electric consumption data should be interpreted. Audit forms are provided for scheduling in general and for specific applications in six basic areas: boilers and central equipment, classrooms and general areas, physical education areas, shops, building exteriors, and kitchens and cafeterias. Appendixes provide a preventive maintenance checklist, lighting level recommendations, a lamp replacement guide, a review of outside air requirements for ventilation, and a discussion of various system configurations for heating, ventilating, and air conditioning.
