Implementing and Evaluating a Bibliographic Retrieval System for Print and Non-Print Media Materials.
Buchholz, James L.
This document summarizes the selection, configuration, implementation, and evaluation of BiblioFile, a CD-ROM based bibliographic retrieval system used to catalog and process library materials for 103 school centers in the Palm Beach County Schools (Florida). Technical processing included the production of spine labels, check-out cards and pockets, and catalog sets for both print and nonprint media by the school district's Department of Instructional Support Services. Initiation of the study resulted from a need for existing support personnel to catalog and process ever-increasing numbers of library books and amounts of audiovisual materials for a large and fast-growing school district. Included are a profile of the department; a comprehensive review of the related literature; and a detailed presentation of the procedures followed during the selection, configuration, and implementation stages of the project. The evaluation of the newly implemented system for end-user effectiveness via an eight-item survey of 103 district media specialists is described, as well as a time-cost study of the administrative system which compared the productive capability of the system with previously employed manual methods. Pertinent data and implications resulting from the survey and the time-cost study are discussed in detail. The final system configuration and a revised set of cataloging and processing procedures are appended. (Author/CGD)
