More than Just a Sampling of Study Abroad: Transformative Possibilities at Best
Blake-Campbell, Barbara
Community College Enterprise, v20 n2 p60-71 Fall 2014
Study abroad is rapidly becoming an academic priority for any program in higher education. The need for American students to broaden their perspective of the interdependent and interconnected world is so important that global learning is being introduced at all levels of the academic pipeline. As a result of this urgency, foreign shores steadily receive an influx of American college students immersing themselves through study abroad programs. Indeed, the world is shrinking as we acknowledge the impact of globalization on social, political, and environmental systems. Higher education stakeholders have also recognized that intercultural competence is necessary to understand the interrelationships between cultures, community, and commerce as well as to negotiate across borders and explore sustainable solutions for the 21st century global and social economy. When long-term study abroad is unavailable to students, short-term study abroad can be beneficial. This paper will endeavor to endorse short-term study abroad as a reflective, engaging, and effective educational approach to encourage a transformed worldview and foster civic global citizenship, which is now viewed as an educational and social imperative.
