Brown: Progress, Challenges, and an Argument for an Inclusive Race and Ethnic Framework of Analysis
Grant, Carl A.
Multicultural Perspectives, v6 n4 p18-21 2004
Recently, reflections on the progress since the 1954 decision in "Brown v. Board of Education" and the challenges confronting those who believed in "Brown" occupy much of the author's daily thinking. Many of the current and recent past education problems and issues are connected generally and specifically to issues of school desegregation: (1) student achievement; (2) decrease in the number of African Americans and Latinos completing high school; (3) teacher quality; (4) vouchers; (5) school choice; (6) finance; and (7) governance. Also, as the student population becomes increasingly Latino and Asian American, advocates for multicultural education have an unique opportunity to use a more inclusive race and ethnic framework to discuss school desegregation. In this article, the author first discusses his reflections on "Brown" on its 50th anniversary; second, he addresses reaffirmation as one of the challenges facing "Brown"--he argues that education is the way to bring about the reaffirmation; third, he argues that discussions on desegregation need to involve a more inclusive race and ethnic framework; and finally, he concludes with his interpretation of an interaction between James Baldwin (1985) and one of his characters in "A Letter From the South," as they both deal with racial segregation.
