Petition to the Environmental Protection Agency to Control Asbestos Emmissions from Spray-On Materials Which Have Been Applied in Public School Buildings for Insulation, Fireproofing, Decorative or Other Purposes.
Environmental Defense Fund, Washington, DC.
This petition requests the Environmental Protection Agency to promulgate regulations in compliance with section 6 of the Toxic Substances Control Act to control asbestos emissions from spray-on materials containing 1 percent or more asbestos that has been applied in public school buildings for insulation, fireproofing, decorative, or other purposes. Specifically, the petition requests the administrator of the agency to establish a program no later than March 1, 1979 that will identify all public schools in which these materials have been used. It also asks the administrator to require the manufacturers and processors of such fiber to take appropriate corrective action to eliminate the emission of asbestos fibers from surfaces that have been sprayed with it. The petition presents evidence that asbestos is a potent carcinogen capable of inducing lung cancer in the human population. (Author/LD)
