Informal Learning in Professional and Personal Life: Implications for Instructional Design and Performance Improvement
Klein, James D.; Moore, Alison L.
Educational Technology, v56 n1 p21-26 Jan-Feb 2016
This article focuses on informal learning and its implications for instructional design and performance improvement. The authors begin by sharing a story of how a novice instructional designer employs informal learning strategies in her professional and personal life. Next, they offer a definition of informal learning that encompasses both intentional and incidental learning and accounts for trends in the field such as constructivist design theory and toward using a range of instructional and non-instructional interventions. Numerous examples of informal learning are provided throughout the article, and the benefits of using such strategies to facilitate learning and enhance performance are discussed.
