Intellectual Engagement, Good Grades and "Doing School": Latest Reports from CEA's What Did You Do in School Today? Initiative
Sefcik, Michael
Education Canada, v53 n1 Win 2013
Are students just "doing school" or are they engaged with their studies? How does a student's level of engagement influence learning, achievement, and teaching? The latest series of What did you do in school today? reports focus on academic outcomes, instructional challenge, and intellectual engagement. The reports reveal there is a suprisingly poor relationship between intellectual engagement and students' grades. Almost half of all students report being engaged in Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science, but this varies between middle and secondary schools. Some districts have reported gains in intellectual engagement since 2007, but such improvements have not occurred uniformly across all schools and grades. (Contains 3 figures and 1 note.)
