Forging a Healthier Path: A Multidisciplinary Team Approach to Reducing Risk and Improving Child Outcomes
Breidenstine, Angela S.; Couvillion, Joy; Many, Cecile
Zero to Three (J), v32 n6 p26-31 Jul 2012
At the age of 4 years, Joseph came to the Orleans Parish Early Childhood Supports and Services program (ECSS) for mental health services because of serious aggression and anger. His history included physical abuse before age 2, long-term maintenance on an atypical antipsychotic medication, and other biological, psychological, and social-environmental risk factors. ECSS worked with Joseph's family toward reducing problematic behaviors and improving his abilities to regulate emotions, interact with others, and engage successfully with his environment. The authors describe how the multidisciplinary nature of ECSS and its capacity to provide multidimensional services to high-risk families was a critical component of successful intervention with Joseph.
