Moving beyond the Amalgam: Restructuring Access Services
Austin, Brice
Journal of Access Services, v7 n3 p145-158 2010
At least since the early 1990s, academic libraries have been merging Circulation and various other related functions into a single department typically labeled "Access Services." In many cases, however, that merger has proven to be administrative rather than functional, with minimal integration of common workflows. This article describes a significant attempt by the Circulation and Interlibrary Loan Services Departments at the University of Colorado, Boulder, to restructure workflows and redistribute personnel in order to achieve a more efficient, integrated, and nimble work unit, an Access Services Department in more than name only.
