Developing Teaching Skills in Physical Education.
Siedentop, Daryl
This textbook attempts to clarify the nature of teaching during the field experience or simulation of that experience for student teachers. The text takes a data-based approach to the development of teaching skills. It is divided into seven chapters. The first chapter, "Systematic Improvement of Teaching Skills," is a narrative description of matters related to the development of teaching skills. Chapters two through seven, referred to as modules, attempt to develop skills in the various areas of teaching: Classroom Management, Interpersonal Relations, Planning for Instruction, Execution of Instruction, School Policies, and Professional Role Development. The specific skills of behavior modification and reality therapy are found in the Appendices. Each module lists precise learning objectives, definitions of terms used in the module, narrative descriptions, and examples of how to develop the skills that are the objectives of the module and alternate means of assessing progress toward the fulfillment of the objectives. A summary of objectives is found at the end of the first chapter, and each module contains a glossary of terms that are relevant to it. These definitions are repeated in a complete glossary of terms at the end of the text. (DMT)
