The phenomenon of violence in interpersonal relationships has been little studied in Russia, and the phenomenon of violence between dating partners has not been the object of scientific interest at all. The study on which the present article is based was designed to obtain information about the violence in dating among students enrolled in universities of Russia, and for the most part it is descriptive. The study was carried out in 2004 in three universities of Russia: Far Eastern State University in Vladivostok, Altai I.I. Polzunov State Polytechnical University in Barnaul, and St. Petersburg State University. Data were obtained reflecting the level and frequency of four aspects of violence on dates: physical violence, psychological aggression, sexual assault, and injuries sustained as a result of violence. In addition, this article examines the results of testing a hypothesis that stated that there are no significant differences between men and women with regard to victimization or the commission of violence against one's intimate partner. The study found a high level of violence against an intimate dating partner, including all four types of violence: 25% of the college students were the victims of one or more "physical attacks" by their partner. An even higher proportion (29%) reported that they themselves had committed physical violence against their partner. The differences between men and women in Russia turned out to be statistically significant, with a much higher level of violence committed by the women (38% in the case of the women, compared to 21% in the case of the men).
