This book provides information on the concept and practice of community colleges in both the United States and India. It is intended to serve as a guideline for the development in India of institutions and programs modeled after American community colleges. The foreword discusses the findings of a survey of colleges in India on vocational/technical education. Sixty-three of 88 colleges responding offer vocational courses. Part 1, Points of View, presents a collection of brief essays relating the role of American community colleges, the community college model, the development of the Indian community college, and community needs in India. Part 2, The Inspiration, focuses on community colleges in the United States. This section discusses American colleges, national statistics, important issues and programs, and curricula. Part 3, The Need for Community Colleges in India, presents national education statistics and policies, the higher education system, and community needs. Part 4, The Feasibility of Community Colleges in India, discusses important findings and recommendations. Part 5, The Existing Experiments of Community Colleges in India, reviews 3 case studies from Canara Community College, Pondicherry University Community College, and Madras Community College.
