The purpose of this study was to identify the needs of general education teachers in U.S. accredited schools abroad when educating students with special needs in grades K-6. General education teachers in U.S. accredited schools abroad have a significant responsibility for educating students with special needs. Most of the research conducted to date has focused on the opinions of administrators and outside observers, and not the teachers themselves (Powell, 2004c). The question addressed in this study was, "What do general educators believe they need in order to educate students with special needs in their classrooms?" Many international teachers lack the training and resources to properly assist students with special needs (Powell, 2004c). The existing research confirms this problem. The participants included 19 teachers from 9 U.S. accredited schools abroad who had at least one student with special needs in their classroom. Data were gathered via an on-line survey with fixed and open-ended questions. The questions focused on the challenges that teachers experience, their needs, topics for training, the types of training they had in the field of special education, and a question that allowed them to identify any other information about working with students with special needs. Teachers agreed that when they felt supported and had experience with students with special needs, they were more capable of providing accommodations. Teachers reported feeling capable of implementing accommodations when they had the materials they needed, time to prepare, small classrooms, and experience.
