This study examines the perspective of public secondary education through the lived experiences and voices of 10 African American male students. The study was qualitative in nature and utilized an action research case study design. The researcher conducted semi structured interviews with a randomly selected group of African American male students from one large suburban school district in Western Pennsylvania. The African American male participants in this study ranged in age from 15-18 years old. Several seniors, and a few juniors, sophomores, and freshman were utilized. The findings indicated that various factors assisted in the shaping of African American males' schooling experiences. Six themes were revealed from the interviews: (a) students' perceptions of their teachers, how students think teachers perceive them, and how students would change their teachers; (b) students perceptions of themselves; (c) role models; (d) curriculum; (e) the achievement gap; and (f) Black-White issues. The findings suggested that African American males are interested in their education; however, some accommodations must be made to provide the best learning environment and experience. These accommodations include are but not limited to more male teachers (race was not an issue), a more culturally infused curriculum, and challenging the African American male student beyond sports towards a well-rounded academic program. The researcher opens a challenge for deeper research and action pertaining to African American males. From the research a movement was birthed called Empowering Black Males (EBM). Its mission is to empower Black males to higher achievement in education and increased participation in community leadership and service.
