"On the Verge of a Renaissance": Arkansas Schools, Curricula, and Teachers during the Great Depression
Field, Sherry L.; Bauml, Michelle; Bellows, M. Elizabeth
American Educational History Journal, v41 n1 p129-143 2014
This article is the third in a larger study of schooling during the Great Depression that seeks to elucidate specific examples of elementary social studies teaching and learning in the South during this time, particularly in Arkansas. Responding to Christine Woyshner's (2009) concern that histories of social studies should look beyond national reports, we provide examples of teaching and curriculum issues, which illuminate the rural schooling experiences particularly. In Arkansas, rural schools were woefully underfunded prior to the depression and continued a painful downward spiral over the next several years. In this article, the authors mine specific examples from more localized sources to answer the following questions: (1) What was the status of elementary social studies in Arkansas as the Great Depression began? and (2) What were localized examples of elementary social studies curriculum and teaching that were influenced by the Great Depression in Southern schools, specifically in Arkansas? Few historical studies have explored localized examples of social studies prior to World War II, and this study helps us further "understand" the field of social studies (Davis 1981, 20).
