This paper synthesizes the results of recent research on the labor market outcomes associated with participation in secondary vocational education. It is based on 10 studies conducted with national data and reported since passage of the 1976 amendments to the Vocational Education Act of 1963. Despite the problems of analyzing vocational outcomes because of student self-selection and the great variability in secondary vocational programs, some recurring results have been found. On the basis of these findings, the following conclusions appear warranted: (1) vocational preparation in business and office courses reduces the amount of time that young women will be unemployed after they leave high school by about 1 to 2 weeks per year; (2) vocational preparation in business and office courses increases the average weekly earnings of young women after they leave high school by about $10 to $20 per week; (3) about half of all females who receive vocational preparation in business and office skills and about half of males who receive training in trade and industrial education in high school obtain jobs using the skills they studied; and (4) males who receive high school training in trade and industrial education are more likely than males without such training to obtain jobs in the skilled trades, while females trained in business and office skills are more likely than those without such training to obtain clerical jobs.
