American Catholic Higher Education. Essential Documents, 1967-1990.
Gallin, Alice, Ed.
This reference volume contains the texts of documents pertinent to the development of Catholic higher education during the years from 1967 to 1990. The documents reveal church officials' and university presidents' collaborative efforts to address the questions of what it means it mean to be a university or college and what it means for such an institution to be Catholic. The documents have been arranged to show that in the struggle to articulate the special role of a Catholic university, Vatican officials and university presidents engaged in a dialogue that began with the attempt of the International Federation of Catholic Universities to formulate a definitive statement, and culminated in the adoption of the apostolic constitution, Ex Corde Ecclesiae, signed by Pope John Paul II in 1990. Various drafts of these documents are provided and are presented in four groupings: (1) those which fed into the statement issues in 1972 by the International Federation of Catholic Universities, "The Catholic University in the Modern World"; (2) those which have subsequently attempted to explicate and/or modify that statement; (3) those that dealt specifically with the development of the revised Code of Canon Law; and (4) the many drafts of the Ex Corde Ecclesiae.
