Do You Mean What We Mean? A Catholic School Lexicon of Words Which Describe Christian Education in Alberta's Catholic Schools.
Laplante, Richard L.
An evolving vocabulary has introduced new words and new meanings for old words into the vocabulary of Alberta's Catholic Schools. The following thirty words and phrases considered to be prime examples are discussed: blueprints, Catholic school, Christian, Christian morality, Christian values, church teachings, difference, ecumenism, faith commitment, faith community, family, hope, majority-minority, ministry of teaching, mission statement, morals, parents, parish, pluralism, practicing Catholic, reconciliation, religion, religious education, sacrament preparation, saints, secular, social justice, tolerance, values, and Vatican II. In each word some historical references, current practice, ecumenical dimensions and future uses are found. Catholic educators are encouraged to use the new words appropriately in conversation. The new words are meant to be a communication tool within the Alberta Catholic community, to serve the process of community building, and to serve as a wider ecumenical vehicle with other public, particulary Christians. References and suggested further readings are included. The book also contains a Catholic education mission statement. (AG)
