Student Disclosure: The Aftermath of Teaching about Sexual Violence in the Classroom
Valanzola, Ashley
Review of Education, Pedagogy & Cultural Studies, v43 n2 p185-203 2021
Teaching about sexual violence in the past is likely to solicit emotional reactions from students, including the potential for them to share their own personal histories related to the topic. According to statistics compiled by the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN, 2020a), university students are a particularly vulnerable population; among undergraduates, 23.1% of women and 5.4% of men experience rape or sexual assault during their time in college. While these numbers fluctuate from year to year, the percentages reveal a long-standing university culture where rape is endemic. How history teachers react to student disclosures of sexual assault is crucial to fostering a healthy learning environment. The main goals of a well-thought-out response are to avoid re-traumatization and point students toward the appropriate resources. The article explores how to respond to an admission of sexual assault both at the initial moment of disclosure and in the weeks that follow. A well-delivered response to a sexual assault disclosure shows history teachers care not only about issues of sexual violence in the past, but that they know how to respond confidently to help students facing sexual assault in the present. Reacting well to a student disclosure establishes trust and allows students to feel safe in their learning environment. Many of the examples in this article take place in a university setting, but the ideas offered to assist teachers can be applied to other levels of education in most circumstances.
