Do Shy Kids Have a Chance of Getting to College?
Hanley, Thomas A., Jr.
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v70 n9 p28-31 May 2005
In this article, the author discusses the importance of teacher recommendations for students who exhibit extreme shyness during college interviews. Admission committees at some colleges are apparently questioning the propensity to favor students who evidence leadership, and who are naturally outgoing, in seeking to balance and diversify the personalities and contributors in the campus community. The author points out that, in this multiethnic society, important cultural implications should be considered in evaluating applicant contributions. For example, as colleges and universities strive for diversity in admission, an increasing number of applicants are appearing from cultures that do not prize and foster American-style extroversion. The author suggests that teachers should attempt to present shy applicants in the most positive light, reminiscing that some of the historical giants, i.e., Thomas Edison, Ulysses S. Grant, Clara Barton, Eleanor Roosevelt, and J. D. Salinger all exhibited insecurities in their youth.
