Attempting to Reach the Heart of the Matter: How the Unique Learning Journey of Facing History and Ourselves Helps Students to Explore and Learn from the Horrors of the Past
McIntyre, Michael; Hull, Vanessa
Teaching History, n169 p58-67 Dec 2017
Michael McIntyre and Vanessa Hull explain the work of Facing History and Ourselves, an education organisation based in the United States and working internationally. Facing History aims to engage students in reflection on why violence occurred in the past, on what this teaches us about the world today and on our place and role within that world. Its programmes teach students to understand the complexity of factors affecting past decisionmaking and then encourage them to make connections, both with other examples from history and with what is happening in the world today. McIntyre and Hull offer specific examples of lesson plans and activities, as undertaken by a school in Gloucestershire. [A list of combined references and notes is included.]
