"Shock Value" Is Overrated in Race Conversations
Kay, Matthew
Educational Leadership, v76 n7 p51-55 Apr 2019
Despite the trend to do so, teachers should never treat race conversations with students as a "moment's theater," says Matthew Kay, a Philadelphia educator and author of "Not Light, But Fire: How to Lead Meaningful Race Conversations in the Classroom." When white teachers stand up in front of students to declare they're "racist" in an attempt to show their vulnerability, this admission does more harm than good. Kay argues that educators should rely less on "shock" and more on steady relationship building with their students of color.
