The availability of relatively inexpensive hand calculators and microcomputers is believed to be having an important effect on the teaching of mathematics and science in the United States. The appropriateness of allowing the use of this technology on standardized tests has become a concern of educators and organizations involved in testing. Informed decisions about calculator and microcomputer use policies should be made with consideration of standard classroom practices and the opinions of teachers at the secondary and postsecondary levels. To help determine this information, surveys of secondary and postsecondary schools across the United States were conducted. This document summarizes this process, and discusses the results of the surveys. Most secondary and postsecondary physics and chemistry instructors allowed the use of nonprogrammable calculators for course work and some tests, and expressed approval for certain standardized tests. Biology instructors were less approving of the use of calculators on tests. Included in the appendices are contact letters, copies of the surveys, lists of academic topics involved, and summaries of comments and responses to the surveys. (CW)
