Public schools are often faced, when engaged in the task of developing annual goals, with the necessity of soliciting public input. To gather reliable input from the school community has been haphazard and uneven. Consolidated High School District 230 (Palos Hills, Illinois) employed the Public Opinion Laboratory, a professional survey firm, to provide efficient, cost effective, and reliable data indicating public opinion about a wide variety of issues affecting its schools. The purpose of this activity was to have the various elements of the school community--parents, students, teachers, administrators, and general citizens--evaluate their schools and identify attainable targets for improvement. This paper presents the results of the telephone survey conducted to obtain parent attitudes on the length of the school day and year, graduation requirements, weighted grades, merit pay, and spending on education. Parents also gave grade ratings to 12 school services and programs. The information has proven a valuable tool in strategic planning for the school district.
