The study presented in this article was conducted to determine psychometric features of scales for Turkish students by adapting the Patterns of Adaptive Learning Scales (PALS) developed by Midgley and others (2000) to the Turkish language in order to measure personal and classroom goal orientations. The scales were developed to test goal-orientation theory by examining relationships between students' motivations, affections, behaviors, and learning environments; and to determine interpersonal differences concerning that quality. Student scales measure: (1) personal achievement-goal orientations; (2) a teacher's perceptions of his or her goals; (3) perceptions of the goal structures in the classroom; (4) achievement-related beliefs, attitudes, and strategies; and (5) perceptions regarding parents and home life. Based on some research findings, the scales were structured to measure mastery and performance goals in relation to adaptive or maladaptive learning patterns. (Contains 7 tables.)
