"Am I a Good Reader?" a Friendly Way to Evaluate Students' Perceptions of Themselves as a Reader
Wangsgard, Nichole
Reading Improvement, v51 n1 p4-10 Spr 2014
Current reading assessments put emphasis in the five components of reading competency, neglecting the self-efficacy needs of students. When students struggle with one of or all five components of reading competency, they could have negative feelings about themselves as a reader. This article offers teachers an effective user friendly assessment method for evaluating how students feel about themselves as readers. Teachers who utilize the cartoon scenario titled "How Sam and Jamie Feel About Reading" as an evaluation tool will better understand how students feel and think about themselves as readers. Implementation of this assessment will help teachers pinpoint their students' unique self-efficacy needs in reading and design instruction that meets their academic and emotional needs in reading.
