Quality Sport Coaching in Action: The Application of the National Standards for Sport Coaches in Youth Sport
Driska, Andrew P.
Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, v33 n6 p14-20 2020
The National Standards for Sport Coaches (NSSC) (SHAPE America -- Society of Health and Physical Educators, 2019) provide guidance to the coaching professionals who work in this wide-ranging context, regardless of what specific type of youth-sport participants they serve. Following these standards will help sport leaders create sport climates that are constructive for youth athletes, allowing them to build skills and form meaningful relationships that will help to retain these athletes from year to year. This vision of youth sport may conflict with many existing programs that operate exclusionary, talent-focused programs that prioritize performance over the need to socialize children and retain them in sport programs throughout childhood. In the absence of a clearly communicated vision of participation-focused youth sport, the values of competition and exclusionary talent development have overtaken the landscape of youth-sport options. This article is a call for youth-sport programs to (re)focus their priorities, noting four of the seven core responsibilities outlined by the NSSC. At the youth level, participation and socialization are primary goals, and in many cases, they are a precondition for skill development. Although participation and socialization are emphasized above skill development at this age, it is still important for coaches to use effective skill development strategies during practices and games. This article draws on long-standing and emerging research on youth-sport settings, the benefits and detriments of youth sport for athletes, and the effects coaches and sport leaders have on this environment. It is also grounded in the practical realities of running a youth-serving sport organization, where volunteers often serve in many important functionary roles. Although the spirit of volunteerism is valued, this is also a call for increased adherence to professional standards in youth-sport coaching and administration.
