CReaTE Excellence: Using a Teacher Framework to Maximize STEM Learning with Your Child
Tassell, Janet; Maxwell, Margaret; Stobaugh, Rebecca
Parenting for High Potential, v3 n2 p10-13 Oct 2013
Gifted children crave meaning through learning experiences, and they are naturally inquisitive. This article provides a teaching framework that parents can adapt for use with gifted children to help facilitate STEM knowledge and skills. The CReaTE Framework, adapted from an evolving lesson plan framework, can promote learning in a nontraditional, yet comprehensive way. The components of CReaTE are: Cognitive complexity, Realworld learning, Technology integration, and Engagement. One approach that parents can borrow from the world of education is to make learning scenarios student-centered rather than teacher-centered. Until recently, the CReaTE Framework has been only accessible to formally trained teachers in the classroom. However, this article illustrates how it can provide a guide for parents and a target for learners hoping to extend their understanding of STEM concepts.
