Leadership Style and Learning Organization: A Survey of Information Technology Professionals
Stewart, Jeffrey E.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
Leadership in information technology (IT) firms remains a topic for study. Understanding how IT professionals react to leadership styles creates an opportunity for IT leaders to better lead by matching expectation to leadership style. Previous research has linked transformation leadership to the learning organization in the pharmaceutical sector, and has linked transformational, transactional and passive / avoidance to learning organizations in the and retail sector in Lebanon. The learning organizational model is measured through the adherence to dimensions of learning opportunities, as these dimensions are measured through collaboration and team learning, environmental connection, inquiry and dialogue, shared learning, collective vision, and modeling/supporting learning. Systems thinking, as the ability to connect through systems, is used to join leadership to learning organizations. This was measured through a structural equation model. The structural equation model is useful in defining a causal relationship between measured data and theory testing and development. The research problem links leadership as a determinate of learning organizations through the research question of how leadership style influences the learning organization. This study collected data from information technology practitioners using an on line survey. Data from this survey of information technology professionals was used to validate the hypothesized model and compared to related studies concluding a strong fit between transformational leadership across all learning organizational dimensions. Transformational leadership was found to be positively correlated to all of the learning organizational dimensions. The structural equation analysis predicted a causal relationship between leadership, environmental and learning organizational dimensions.
