Perceptions of Attending a STEM Sports Science Summer Institute and Its Influence on Student Interest in Sports Science-Sports Medicine Careers
Ouahiba Boukaabar
ProQuest LLC, D.Ed. Dissertation, Indiana University of Pennsylvania
The STEM-based sports sectors supply vital careers in clinical, athletic, and educational settings. Long-term planning is necessary to foster student interest in STEM based sports disciplines and for this purpose, educational institutions must provide learners with information about STEM careers before starting high school and encourage them to take part in structured after-school STEM related activities. A STEM sports summer program was offered to increase middle school students' interest in STEM based sports careers. This qualitative case study examined students' perceptions on pursuing STEM based sports careers after attending a one-week STEM summer sports science program. To analyze the development in students' interest in considering careers in these fields, the study used artifacts, observations, semi-structured interviews, and post-camp student surveys. This study's findings showed that students' interest in STEM disciplines increased after immersing them in real-life learning experiences and offering them enjoyable STEM sports hands-on activities, field trips, and daily interactions with field experts. The results of this study showed how well a one-week STEM Summer Sport Science Institute worked to spark students' interest in considering STEM based sports careers. Results showed that students' interest increased, and their perspectives were influenced by a well-designed STEM program that placed a strong emphasis on sports and STEM careers. The program's content, qualified instructors, and encouraging environment had a substantial influence on students' perceptions towards careers in sports science and sport medicine.
