America is in Trouble, National Wildlife Federation's 1970 National EQ Index.
National Wildlife Federation, Washington, DC.
This is the second annual edition of the EQ (Environmental Quality) Index and is reprinted from the October-November, 1970 National Wildlife Magazine. The index is an attempt "to assign some values and form some judgements on those vital factors that make up the quality of our life--and to decide whether we were winning or losing the pollution battle" since the 1969 EQ Index was published. The 1970 EQ Trend Level indicates that the overall environmental quality is deteriorating at an accelerating rate. Ratings assigned losses to each of these areas of environmental quality: air, water, wildlife, soil, minerals, and living space. The only area to be rated with a slight gain was "timber." The dangers of overpopulation are discussed, but this area is not rated. Problems are highlighted in each of the environmental areas and numerous colored charts, diagrams and photographs are utilized. Recommendations for improvements in each of the environmental areas are included, as is a list of things that an individual can do to help reduce environmental problems. (PR)
