FLICC/FEDLINK Conference on Making Library Automation Choices (Washington, D.C., May 6, 1986).
Landrum, Hollis
This report of a conference convened by the Federal Library and Information Center Committee (FLICC) Subcommittee on Education provides brief summaries of four panel discussions conducted by 15 federal librarians who had assembled automation systems for their agencies' libraries and information centers. The first panel, consisting of Dean Hough, Ann Roane Clary, Ellen Johnson, and Patti Fields, described decision-making alternatives during the automated library system selection process, including useful sources of information for selecting a system, constraints on choices such as economic and political limitations, and selection-making criteria and procedures. Rosalie Sherwin, Jane Perry, John Celli, and Dean Hough participated in a second panel that described retrospective conversion alternatives using house staff, contractors, and Library of Congress Select MARC (machine-readable cataloging), and discussed problems centered around scheduling, deadlines, quality assurance, and monitoring payments. A third panel, consisting of Stephen Toney, Susan Wagner, Sarah Mikel, Mary Bonnett, and Richard Shrout, described minicomputer-based automated library systems at several federal libraries, including hardware and software requirements, installation procedures, writing specifications, and problems regarding authority control, telecommunication, and revisions. Finally, Elwynda Chapman, Rosemary Coskey, Jill Drucker, and Ann Roane Clary discussed topics related to the use of microcomputer systems for automating library tasks, including installation, training, limitations, and telecommunications. An extensive reading list of sources provided by the speakers makes up more than half of the report. (KM)
