Summarizing the beginning of the second year of operation of the hatchery and educational program provided by the Applied Fisheries Science Program at Sheldon Jackson College in Sitka, Alaska for Alaska Natives and non-Native groups interested in salmon ranching, this fifth semi-annual report covers the period July 1 through December 31, 1976 and presents the following: Background (program objectives, advisory committee, and program staff); Program Progress (planning and coordination of educational programs, the Sea Grant Program, student recruitment and publicity, and funding sources); Academic Program; Advisory Services; Aquaculture Facilities (spring fry release and summer work in experimental incubators, sea water lab, and fry rearing); Fall Operations (Starrigavan Creek, Katlian River, Nakwasina River, Indian River, Hydroelectric Tailrace, 1976 Egg Take, and personnel); Future Hatchery and Academic Plans; Appendices. Major accomplishments reported here include: provision of two new teaching staff via a Sea Grant award; construction of the sea lab to be completed during spring semester; publications of "Aquaculture Newsletter" (disseminated to all Alaska high schools); student requests for maximum hands-on experience; finalization of the certification process for spring students.
