Student Happiness: An Update
Huebner, Scott
Communique, v46 n5 p26-27 Nov 2017
In 2010, Scott Huebner authored an article in "Communiqué" in which he suggested that happiness was a neglected but important topic in education in general and school psychology in particular (Huebner, 2010). At the time, there was a rapidly developing, but still rather modest body of evidence to support the contention. The purpose of this article is to provide some further consideration of the topic, including updating the previous article, pointing toward some more recent literature. Huebner focuses on findings that have the most important applications for practicing school psychologists. The studies mentioned in the article represent only a few examples, however the overall findings of the growing body of literature on subjective well-being and school-age students converges to suggest the potential value of monitoring all students' levels of subjective well-being, as well as screening for their mental health problems.
