Wage-Earner or Family Member? FCS Students Learn How to Achieve a Balance

Successful business people in all walks of life recognize that achieving a balance between their work lives and their families is critical to their personal happiness. Although the subject is mentioned in textbooks and seminars, very little, if any, time is spent discussing how the young career person will achieve this goal. Fortunately, potential young executives have an opportunity to learn these vital skills during high school, by taking a family and consumer sciences (FCS) class. Included in the mission statement for FCS are phrases such as "strengthening the well-being of individuals and families," and "promoting optimal nutrition and wellness across the lifespan." Because of FCS classes such as "Nutrition and Wellness, Family Health, Parenting, Child Development, and Family Relations," young business people have learned to anticipate the challenges that might occur at each stage of one's lifespan. Hopefully, they will make wiser choices that will help them build their careers while maintaining healthy lifestyles and high quality family lives. The middle school and high school years are the only times when some students will have the opportunity to focus on important life skills. Wage earner or family member: which is more important? Through the FCS curriculum, students are able to learn skills for both. It is an education needed by everyone.
