Gender 101: Helping Students Become Aware of Stereotypes of Gender and Language
Petit, Angela
Teaching English in the Two-Year College, v31 n2 p130-143 Dec 2003
Students' experiences of gender critically influence their everyday lives, and introducing them to the presence of gender in language is essential if all students are to recognize and challenge stereotypes that portray people in limited, restrictive ways. For this reason, this article describes a workshop that draws from students' own knowledge of gender to help them become aware of stereotypes of gender and language in everyday discourse. The article first outlines the theories of gender and language that ground the workshop and, next, details activities that put these theories into practice. Appropriate for students in first-year college writing courses and advanced secondary writing courses, this workshop aims to help students move beyond simplistic notions of male-female language. Aware of gender's true complexity, students will better understand the issues of gender important in any writing classroom, particularly the need to understand that beliefs about gender permeate language and to avoid the biased language uses that spring from these beliefs.
