International Symposium for Literacy Final Report (Persepolis, Iran, September 3-8, 1975).
The final report of the International Symposium for Literacy, which met in Persepolis, Iran, from September 3-8, 1975, is presented. Participating were 75 individuals from around the world, including representatives from China, Vietnam, and North Korea. Chapter 1 discusses the symposium's origin and sponsoring committee activities while chapter 2, Proceedings of the Symposium, describes the participants, various meetings, officials, and the media. Chapter 3 discusses Themes of the symposium: (1) the appraisal and lessons of 10 years of adult literacy work; (2) functionalities of literacy, in view of the need to satisfy the essential needs of man in terms of economic activities, health, culture, and participation in the reform of society; (3) the determination to introduce deep changes in the living conditions of man and in social structures as a sine qua non of literacy undertakings; and (4) innovative role of literacy experiments in the reform of teaching and training systems and their integration into the global educational processes. Chapter 4 discusses the drafting and approval of the Declaration of Persepolis and the Shahinshah of Iran's remarks. The concluding chapter, Annexes, includes a list of participants, the text of the opening and closing speeches, working documents, and the Declaration. (LH)
