Members of the Tennessee Library Association's Technical Services Roundtable examined the extent to which the developing technology of automation is being utilized by the state's libraries. The survey encompassed technical service activities and had a two-fold thrust: to determine how automation is being employed, and to compile an inventory of the software and hardware in use. Findings indicate that 88 of the 174 responding libraries (approximately 50%) are actively engaged in automation. The types of systems operating in the state are diverse, which is deemed to be significant since it may affect the goal of developing the state resource sharing network envisioned in Tennessee's long-range plan for library services. Among the libraries that have implemented or planned automation projects, the highest interests are shown in the following areas: (1) current cataloging (82%); (2) online public access catalogs (52%); (3) multi-functions serials programs (40%); (4) multi-function acquisitions programs (30%); and (5) multi-function circulation program (48%). Following a brief report on the study, the survey instrument and data tables corresponding to each question are presented. A 32-item bibliography lists directories, library automation surveys, and general works on library automation and library technical services. (SD)
