When Every Day Is Professional Development Day
Tienken, Christopher H.; Stonaker, Lew
Journal of Staff Development, v28 n2 p24-29 Spr 2007
In the Monroe Township (New Jersey) Public Schools, teachers' learning occurs daily, not just on one day in October and February. Central office and school-level administrators foster job-embedded teacher growth. Every day is a professional development day in the district, but that has not always been so. How did the district become a system with job-embedded professional learning? This article describes how the district's professional development committee alters the district's professional development from one-shot "topics" to a system based on NSDC's Standards for Staff Development. Personal professional and organizational growth occur simultaneously every day in Monroe Township because the staff and administration focus on learning. Teachers and administrators follow year-long personal learning plans. Administrators and teachers work with peers in learning teams. Still, professional development committee members continue to actively look for ways to improve the program.
