R.E.A.D.Y.: Read, Educate and Develop Youth. Reading Plan for Michigan: Parent Information for Infants, Toddlers, and Preschoolers. Learning Begins at Birth. [Kit with Videotape and Audiotape].
Michigan Association for the Education of Young Children, East Lansing.
Noting the important role that parents can play in preparing their child to learn to read, the Read, Educate and Develop Youth (READY) Reading Plan for Michigan provides kits to parents of infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. The kits contain suggestions for age-appropriate activities parents can do with their children to help them learn. In addition, the kit includes a book for their child, a child development chart, a folder with a list of enjoyable books for children, an "I Am Your Child" booklet and videotape, a READY parent membership card, and a children's music cassette. The "I Am Your Child" booklet provides information on child development and brain growth, and presents 10 guidelines for promoting young children's healthy development and school readiness: (1) be warm, loving, and responsive; (2) respond to the child's cues and clues; (3) talk, read, and sing to the young child; (4) establish routines and rituals; (5) encourage safe exploration and play; (6) make TV watching selective; (7) use discipline as an opportunity to teach; (8) recognize that each child is unique; (9) choose quality child care and stay involved; and (10) take care of yourself. The "I Am Your Child" videotape explores parents' role in stimulating early childhood development. The 29-minute video discusses attachment and the role of touch; parent-child communication through speaking, singing, and reading aloud to facilitate language acquisition; health and nutrition; discipline; self-esteem; child care; and self-awareness.
