Hear Ye, Hear Ye: A Dozen Messages from the New York Common Core Crier

In 2010, Jean Stevens from the New York State Education Department addressed a group of NY state administrators and shared, "It is no mistake that inquiry-based learning is throughout the Common Core." That was a cornerstone cry for which only school librarians knew the significance. After years of fighting for turf as a poor fief, it was as though the lord of the manor had knighted the troops. Since that noble announcement, many messages for educators have been promulgated, and in New York State the messages just keep coming and coming and coming. With each announcement comes a new understanding--a new view into what the Common Core picture is supposed to look like. Even though the New York State Education Department has done a supreme job of funding curriculum and training, getting the message down to the serfs is a tough task and not every teacher has heard the crier's decrees. The Common Core pedagogy news is traveling at a medieval rate, despite the state department of education's valiant effort, and the presence of technology and the Internet at educators' fingertips. New York is a Race to the Top (RttT) state, in addition to being one of the forty-five Common Core states, which has set up New York as a "leader" state in the CCSS adoption. However, that does not mean every soldier is following. Herein the author provides a list of representative Common Core Cries from the New York State Education Department. These comments represent good instructional paradigm shifts that can be embraced by school librarians and other educators everywhere.
