The Transformation of a Private University's School of Nursing, 1999-2009: An Historical Case Study
Selick, Sandra A.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
The purpose of this study was to examine the transformation of the School of Nursing at a private university in a Middle Atlantic state during the years 1999 to 2009. The secondary purpose of this study was to determine the leadership style of the Director of the School of Nursing at this private university in a Middle Atlantic state that led this transformation. This timeframe was selected because the nursing school was on the brink of disaster in 1999 when the Director was hired and by 2009, it was the top nursing school in the state. This qualitative historical case study was based on institutional data and interviews of 3 faculty, 3 administrators, and the Director of the nursing program. The participants were asked open-ended questions concerning the overall transformation of the nursing school, the role of leadership, and the challenges facing the nursing school. This study contributes to the body of literature on organizational transformation as well as is an inspiring example for other higher education programs that are on the verge of closing.
