We All Belong! The Tecumseh Mural Project
Lukawecky, Kristine
Arts & Activities, v145 n5 p16-17 Jun 2009
The author of this article describes how as the visual-arts teacher of Tecumseh Public School, she brought the entire school and community together by creating a mural that promoted belonging. The mural involved tapping into the the creativity of all 400 students from kindergarten through eighth grade at Tecumseh while creating a work of art with a clear message. Each grade level was responsible for various sections of the mural, including a series of symbolic borders. All the students enjoyed the creative process and took a great deal of care when glazing their tiles. The project brought the entire student population, staff, parents and the community together and has created a lasting impact. Two years later, students still walk down the main hall and proudly point their tile out to their friends and visitors pause for more than a quick look.
