Chicano Literature of the Midwest: The Production of "Los Desarraigados."
McAlpine, Dave
Following a brief discussion of the origins of the Chicanos in the Midwest, this paper surveys and quotes at length from several Spanish language periodicals produced in the Midwest between 1925 and the early 1980s. Discussion of the Chicano origins in the Midwest touches on emigration resulting from the Mexican Revolution of 1910-1917, the bracero programs which began during World War I, deportation and repatriation following World War I, and the transportation of Mexicans and Chicanos from the Southwest to the Midwest. The paper then describes 20 midwestern periodicals concerned with Chicano affairs, giving information such as dates and place of publication, intended audience, goals, and literary works published, if any. Poems, essays, fables, and dialogue are quoted to illustrate literary genres, styles, and content. The final section of the paper lists contemporary Chicano writers born and/or living in the Midwest and notes the type of writing they are engaged in, their university affiliation, and the publications containing their work.
