At Lenoir Community College (LCC) in Kinston, North Carolina, 20% of established programs and 33% of the non-academic support services are reviewed each year in an annual cycle, with all programs reviewed within a 5-year period. To evaluate the Mental Health Associate (MHA) Program at LCC, assessment surveys were sent to 44 graduates from the previous 5 years, 1985-1990; 94 early program leavers from 1985-1990; 8 current program students in May 1990; 6 advisory committee members in March 1990; and 10 employers of former students in March 1990 identified by responding graduates and early leavers. Response rates for these groups were 20%, 5%, 100%, 83%, and 60% respectively. In addition, surveys were completed by the acting Program Head and the Unit Dean. Results of the review process included the following: (1) most graduates and early leavers reported benefitting from the education received at LCC by obtaining related employment; (2) advisory committee members reported that labor demand for the program is stable; (3) employers rated former LCC students job performances as "somewhat better" than others with two-year college training; (4) instruction at LCC was rated "excellent" by current students and early leavers; and (5) minority students are well represented in the program. A review of needs and recommendations related to program quality, instruction, courses, equipment, and supplies/materials; a discussion of the program review process at LCC; a description of the development of the MHA program and degree requirements; and copies of assessment instruments for the different groups surveyed are included.
