Evaluating the Effectiveness of READ 180: A Reading Program for Struggling Middle School Students
Johnson, Latonya R.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Jones International University
This study was conducted using a qualitative approach to evaluate the effectiveness of READ 180 Program in improving students reading interests and achievement at West Bolivar Middle School (WBMS). A number of interviews and observations were conducted. Two teachers and nine students were interviewed, and nine classroom observations were conducted. The participants included nine 5th grade students who were initially enrolled in the READ 180 Program as a result of their minimal reading scores on the 2010 state assessment, Mississippi Curriculum Test 2 (MCT2). There were some weaknesses found in the implementation of the READ 180 Program. However, findings suggested that the READ 180 Program provided content and activities that were of interest to the students as the students continuously displayed active engagement in the learning process. The READ 180 Program was found to be beneficial at the middle school level as it provided diverse, creative, and effective instruction for struggling readers.
