Poetry in the Classroom: Finding New Roads. Poetry and Children Series.
This 20-minute videotape program presents poet and Columbia University professor Kenneth Koch conducting a poetry workshop with a small group of fourth and fifth graders. The program's notes explain that Koch believes that students should be allowed to write poetry in the same way that they are allowed to dance and sing--with freedom, encouragement, and subtle guidance. According to the notes, Koch teaches the students to exaggerate, color, and dream with words, without constraints upon their feelings or creativity--he tells them "not to worry that their shoelaces might be untied when they give someone a kiss." The video program shows that within 45 minutes Koch's students were writing poetic verse with enthusiasm and purpose, and with sparkles in their eyes. The program's notes stress that Koch's lesson is really for the teachers, who quickly see the merits of a fresh, creative, risk-free, hands-on approach to the study of poetry in the schools. (NKA)
