AVID Elementary Perceptions of Impact: A Program Evaluation
Felicia Rene Noel
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, San Diego State University
The issue of unfinished learning and achievement gaps in schools has been a persistent concern in recent years, particularly among underrepresented and disadvantaged student populations. AVID Elementary is a promising solution for ensuring students have the necessary knowledge and skills to be college and career ready, as it is based on proven success of the AVID program for secondary students. However, there is a lack of research on the effectiveness of AVID Elementary. This program evaluation employs a mixed-method approach to investigate the impact of AVID Elementary on academic achievement, fostering a culture of college and career readiness, and promoting student self-advocacy. The program evaluation is based on participants' perceptions of the program, including students and staff from one elementary school in southern California. The study concluded that to achieve maximum impact, AVID Elementary requires consistent use of WICOR strategies, a school-wide approach, dedicated collaboration time, focused professional development, and explicit introduction of all elements to students. The program evaluation also found that AVID Elementary has a positive impact on academic achievement, culture of college and career readiness, and student self-advocacy, as perceived by participants. Overall, this study contributes to the growing body of research on AVID Elementary and provides valuable insights for educators and policymakers seeking to close the achievement gap and promote equitable outcomes for all students. The study also underscores the importance of continued evaluation and improvement of the program, and the need for future research to explore the program's effectiveness using objective measures of success.
