Does the Truth Matter in Science?
Lipton, Peter
Arts and Humanities in Higher Education: An International Journal of Theory, Research and Practice, v4 n2 p173-183 2005
Is science in the truth business, discovering ever more about an independent and largely unobservable world? Karl Popper and Thomas Kuhn, two of the most important figures in science studies in the 20th century, gave accounts of science that are in some tension with the truth view. Their central claims about science are considered here, along with two arguments that bear directly on the truth question. One argument makes an appeal to past scientific failures to argue against the truth view; the other makes an appeal to present scientific successes to argue for it. Both arguments are problematic.
